Breast Lift

A breast lift surgically raises sagging breasts resulting in a more youthful breast shape and a higher position for the areola and nipple. Dr. Ver Steeg often combines implants with a breast lift because they assist in forming the breast's new contours and firmness.

About the Procedure

A breast lift can be an outpatient surgery procedure, under local sedation or general anesthesia, lasting from ninety minutes to three hours. When implants are used, Dr. Ver Steeg will create a pocket for the implant either directly behind the breast tissue or under the pectoralis muscle, and then position the implant within this pocket. Read more about implants under Breast Augmentation.

After Surgery

Some temporary bruising, swelling and numbness of the breasts can be expected. Dr. Ver Steeg will give you a prescription for pain medication after surgery. Expect to be up and about the day after surgery, but not back to work for a week or so. Consider arranging for a friend or family member to drive you home after surgery, to stay with you for the first 24 hours following surgery, and possibly a day or so longer. Risks for breast lifts include infection, skin loss, thickening of the scar, change or loss in nipple sensation or uneven positioning of the nipples. The risks, and what to do if symptoms appear, are discussed in detail before surgery.

Recovery

Recovery instructions tailored to each woman's surgery procedure and experience will be provided by Dr. Ver Steeg. These instructions will be very detailed, including everything from the type of bra to be worn to when to return to work and how soon normal activities can be resumed. Avoid lifting anything over your head for three to four weeks. Recovery time is one to two weeks, with strenuous activity limited for one month or more. Fading of scarring occurs within several months to a year.
